Grade 2

Welcome to second grade!

As students enter, they begin to make the switch from learning to read, to reading to learn. They explore various genres including fairy tales, mysteries, and non-fiction texts. Students will learn a variety of strategies to help them as readers. These strategies include predicting, inferencing, questioning, synthesizing, making connections, and summarizing. Students begin to understand the connection between reading and writing as they develop their craft as authors. Using a hands-on approach in math, students are able to solve real-word problems involving addition and subtraction. Students are also exposed to a variety of concepts including telling time, 2-D and 3-D shapes, counting money, and place value. In the area of science, students will explore units on the states of matter, nutrition, and plants. Second grade is a year of exploration and learning!
