Unified Arts

The Unified Arts department at the elementary level consists of art, music, physical education, library/media, and technology classes. Each class meets once a week for 40 minutes. Through these opportunities students are able to explore and develop habits and skills that ensure a well rounded learner.

Art

Welcome to the Art Room! Here students will explore the many aspects of art. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials, techniques, art history and culture, to expand their art knowledge and appreciation. Students have art 40 mins, once a week, which amounts to approximately 32 art classes a year. In order to make the most of their time, students are expected to follow our ART rules of Always doing their best, Respecting the teacher, fellow classmates, classroom and tools. Tools must always be used properly and safely. With this in mind, students will be able to positively share their ideas and have creative experiences that broaden their view of themselves others, and the world around them.

Library/Media

The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.

This is accomplished by:
• encouraging and providing access to a wide variety of print and digital materials.
• providing instruction and assistance in reading, viewing, using, and expressing information and ideas.
• supporting teachers in designing learning strategies to utilize in the classroom and encourage application of skills

Music

Everyone is musical! Music is a wonderful tool for students to express themselves and fosters a sense of community in a unique way. Through general music classes, chorus, & band students will have the opportunity to learn the language of music. Students will become tuneful, beat-ful, and artful musicians by singing, moving to, and responding to music. Students will also learn to read and write musical notation to be able to share musical ideas. As part of the Unified Arts curriculum, our goal is to help develop every student’s musical skills so they feel confident in participating in and appreciating music throughout their lives.

Physical Education

Physical education is an integral part of the educational process. The PE program is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle through a multi-disciplinary approach.

The physically educated person is:

Physically conditioned for life’s demands
Motivated to be physically active
Skilled in health-enhancing physical activities
Prepared for citizenship
Safely equipped

All students will develop physical skills in sports and recreational activities; develop physical fitness; acquire knowledge and appreciation of sports and physical activity as lifetime recreational activities; and demonstrate attributes of good sportsmanship. Differentiation, modifications and accommodations are used based on the needs of each student.

Students at the elementary level participate in physical education one time per week for a 40 minute session. Please have your child wear sneakers for their physical education class. Sneakers allow more protection for the feet and are less slippery on the gym floor and usually don’t fall off during physical education class.

Technology

The goal of the computer class is to teach all children the computer and technology skills detailed throughout Seymour Schools Computer Curriculum as well as to support the common core state standards. The students learn to use these skills in integration with the classroom teacher in order to accomplish academic goals as well as to become lifelong learners of technology.

Through active hands-on lessons, there is an emphasis on the use of digital tools and digital citizenship in order to support the teaching of academic subjects. Students are taught and regularly practice responsible digital citizenship.
